Understanding stress

Stress is a natural response, triggered by situations where we feel pressured, challenged or threatened. While this is quite common, it should not be constant. This is why reaching out for support is an important and positive step.

Stress can build slowly, or it may arrive suddenly. Whether it’s caused by work, relationships, life events or health, a sustained period of stress can take a huge toll on your emotional and physical wellbeing.

Common signs of stress include:

  • Feeling tense, anxious, irritable or on edge
  • Exhaustion from trying to cope
  • Struggling to concentrate, switch off or sleep
  • Headaches, muscle tension, shaking or sweating
  • Difficulty managing responsibilities or making decisions
  • Feeling stuck, overloaded or worn out

You may feel the need to courageously carry on, but the real courage is in knowing when to speak up and seek help, before things worsen.

How stress can affect your life

Stress isn’t just a mental experience – it can shape other aspects of your life, impact your wellbeing, and affect those around you too.

You might notice changes in:

  • Emotions: feeling overwhelmed, tearful or easily frustrated
  • Body: fatigue, restlessness or changes in appetite and sleep
  • Habits: drinking or smoking more and neglecting your health
  • Behaviour: withdrawing, becoming reactive or avoiding challenges
  • Relationships: communication becoming strained or feeling distant
  • Work: reduced focus, lower motivation or a sense of burnout

When stress becomes persistent it can feel isolating and exhausting. The weight of it all can leave you unsure what to do or where to turn, but happily, you don’t have to figure things out on your own. Counselling offers a supportive space for you to express any issues, without pressure or judgement.

ABOUT ME

A person-centred approach

As a person-centred counsellor, my role is to offer warmth, understanding and genuine listening, so you have space to explore the causes of stress and how it’s affecting you.

My own life experience and a career in education have taught me a lot about stress, resilience and the challenges people face. I bring this into my counselling, and provide a calm, steady presence amid the turmoil and tension you are enduring. Much of alleviating stress is having the space to ‘step outside’ it, and discover new insights.

I gently guide each session at a comfortable pace, helping you to work through your difficulties and lighten the load. Together, we can make sense of your situation and find a way forward.

Person-centred therapy can help you:

  • Understand what’s contributing to stress
  • Explore your feelings safely and honestly
  • Identify emotional or practical pressures
  • Reconnect with your strengths and inner resources
  • Build self-compassion and resilience
  • Develop techniques to feel calm and in control

What sessions are like
I primarily work with people face-to-face, at my home in Northaw, close to Potters Bar, Enfield and Barnet. I often find that being in the same room together helps build a natural rapport. However, I appreciate that time and distance will not always allow this, so I am also happy to conduct online video sessions or a combination of both.

In our sessions, you can expect:

  • A warm, welcoming and comfortable environment
  • A confidential setting where you can simply ‘be’ and breathe
  • Time to talk, without judgement or interruption
  • Space to explore what you’re experiencing and feeling
  • Support to pause, reflect and see yourself better
  • Gentle guidance, as we seek understanding and progress

What you may gain from therapy

As our sessions progress, you should begin to notice:

  • Reduced overwhelm and an easing of tension
  • Greater clarity, calm and balance in daily life
  • Shifts in perspective that ease the burden and enable progress
  • Improved resilience, self-awareness and coping strategies
  • Increased confidence in expressing and managing your needs

While therapy won’t entirely eliminate stress from your life, it can help you recognise the triggers and find healthier ways to respond. Talking things through is often a great relief, and my aim is to create a grounding space where you can find an inner calm and move forwards.
