Understanding anxiety & depression

Anxiety and depression can feel overwhelming, confusing or exhausting, and it may seem hard to understand or explain exactly what’s going on inside. This is more common than you might think, and reaching out for support is an important and courageous step.

While anxiety and depression quite often overlap, they can also show up in different ways. Let’s look at the causes and signs of each.

What is anxiety, and what can cause it?

Anxiety is a natural response, but it can become difficult if this heightened state persists, or occurs frequently. It often involves a mix of physical symptoms, racing thoughts and a sense of unease.

Anxiety can be caused by things we are facing now, such as life changes, difficult relationships, stressful situations, or the burden of responsibilities. It may also be triggered by past experiences, or worrying about the future. Even if the cause isn’t yet clear to you, counselling offers a way to explore and understand what contributes to your anxiety, and the best ways to ease this.

Common signs of anxiety

  • Persistent worry, tension or restlessness
  • A racing heart, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea
  • Difficulty sleeping, relaxing or switching off
  • Feeling on-edge or overstimulated
  • Trouble concentrating because your mind is ‘busy’
  • Avoiding situations for fear of feeling overwhelmed

What is depression, and what can cause it?

Depression is a persistent low mood that can affect how you think, feel and function. It is often characterised by prolonged sadness, with a sense of heaviness, disconnection or emotional numbness. This can make even small tasks feel daunting or difficult.

There are many possible causes, including stress, exhaustion, loss, relationship problems, or feeling stuck in life. These may involve current issues, reflections on our past, or despair about the future. Biological factors can play a part too, including genetics, hormones and brain chemistry. Whatever the reason, it’s important to know that with the right support, improvement and recovery are very much possible.

Common signs of depression

  • A heavy, flat or hopeless feeling
  • Persistent low mood or a sense of sadness
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
  • Difficulty finding pleasure in everyday life or activities
  • Struggling with energy, motivation, focus or productivity
  • Changes in sleep patterns and eating habits

How anxiety and depression can affect daily life

Whether you experience anxiety, depression, or both, they can touch every aspect of life, and often in unexpected ways.

Emotions

Increased sadness, fear, irritability or feeling overwhelmed

Body

Tiredness, tension, racing thoughts, changes in appetite or sleep

Behaviour

Withdrawing from people, avoiding situations, or losing enthusiasm

Relationships

Finding it harder to communicate or feel understood

Work or tasks

Difficulty concentrating, making decisions or coping with pressure

Such challenges can leave you unsure what to do or where to turn, but you don’t have to figure things out on your own. Therapy offers a calm, supportive space where you can gently explore what’s happening, at your own pace. Sharing your thoughts and feelings can be a real relief, easing the burden you carry and – with gentle guidance – opening a pathway to clarity, stability and recovery.

My close friends and family have noticed a real change in me

"I had a short course of therapy with Melody for anxiety and panic attacks, and it made a huge difference. Melody is incredibly kind and creates such a calm, safe environment that really allows you to reflect. She helped me set realistic, achievable goals and gently encouraged me to try new tools that truly worked for me. I now feel confident knowing what to do when I’m in difficult situations, and my close friends and family have noticed a real change in me. The hardest part was making that first call to ask for help - but after that, I genuinely looked forward to my weekly sessions. I’m now sleeping better than I have in years. Thank you for everything, Melody. You truly are amazing!"

ABOUT ME

A person-centred approach

I provide person-centred counselling to help you make sense of your difficulties, enhancing your ability to control thoughts and emotions, reconnect with others and experience an enjoyable, meaningful life.

My approach is grounded in empathy, warmth and genuine listening. I wholeheartedly believe in creating a relationship where you feel safe, accepted and understood. Together, we can make sense of what you’re going through and help you move forward.

Person-centred therapy can help you:

  • Understand and express feelings that seem tangled or unclear
  • Explore your experiences without judgement or pressure
  • Build self-compassion and emotional resilience
  • Focus on your strengths, nurture your resolve, and discover solutions from within

What sessions are like
I primarily work with people face-to-face, at my home in Northaw, close to Potters Bar, Enfield and Barnet. I often find that being in the same room together helps build a natural rapport. However, I appreciate that time and distance will not always allow this, so I am also happy to conduct online video sessions or a combination of both.

In our sessions, you can expect:

  • A warm, welcoming and comfortable environment
  • A confidential, calm setting where you can simply be yourself
  • Time to talk about whatever feels important, past or present
  •  Attentive, thoughtful listening, without judgement
  • Space to explore your inner world at your own pace
  • Gentle guidance, as we seek understanding and progress

What you may gain from therapy

Many people begin to notice:

  • A sense of relief and reduced overwhelm
  • Increased clarity around thoughts, emotions and patterns
  • Greater confidence and inner stability
  • Renewed hope, happiness, motivation and direction
  • A stronger, more compassionate connection with themselves, and others

Everyone’s journey is different, and therapy supports you in finding what feels right for you.
