Understanding relationship challenges

Relationships play an important role in our wellbeing, and when they become strained, it can deeply affect how we feel. You might be struggling with family tensions, a challenging intimate relationship or uncertainty with friendships. It could also be about interactions with people at work for example, or in a social setting.

Sometimes it’s not a particular relationship, but a wider sense of difficulty connecting with others, or feeling trapped by patterns and outcomes that leave you hurt or confused.

People often seek support when they experience:

  • Difficulty building and maintaining healthy relationships
  • Feeling misunderstood, unheard or unappreciated
  • A sense of rejection or being hurt by others
  • Repeated cycles of conflict, disappointment or loss
  • Trouble setting boundaries or managing behaviours
  • Loneliness, even when surrounded by people

If you’re finding any kind of relationship hard to navigate, counselling can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and explore other ways to interact and connect.

How relationship issues can affect you

Relationship struggles often have an impact beyond just the connection itself. They can affect your general wellbeing, and your sense of self– who you are, what you value and how you feel or act.

  • Emotional strain: sadness, anxiety, frustration or confusion
  • Self-esteem: doubting yourself or feeling that you’re ‘not enough’
  • Communication: difficulty expressing needs or feelings
  • Behaviour: withdrawing, people-pleasing or overthinking
  • Daily life: constant worry or tension weighing you down

It can be difficult to discuss these matters when the people you might turn to are involved in some way, or where others may be quick to judge. Whether you’re struggling with a specific relationship or a wider pattern, counselling provides a clear and unbiased perspective, where you can talk things through in a safe, steady space. This can bring a real sense of relief and clarity.

ABOUT ME

A person-centred approach

I provide person-centred counselling to help you make sense of your difficulties, enhancing your ability to connect with others and experience more meaningful, stable and rewarding relationships.

My approach is grounded in empathy, warmth and genuine listening. I wholeheartedly believe in creating a space where you feel safe, accepted and understood. Together, we can make sense of what you’re going through and help you move forward.

Person-centred therapy can help you:

  • Understand the feelings behind relationship patterns
  • Explore what you would like from connections with others
  • Build confidence in communicating honestly and openly
  • Recognise old emotional habits that may no longer serve you
  • Make peace with past actions or events that hinder progress
  • Move towards healthier, more fulfilling relationships

What sessions are like
I primarily work with people face-to-face, at my home in Northaw, close to Potters Bar, Enfield and Barnet. I often find that being in the same room together helps build a natural rapport. However, I appreciate that time and distance will not always allow this, so I am also happy to conduct online video sessions or a combination of both.

In our sessions, you can expect:

  • A warm, welcoming and comfortable environment
  • A confidential, calm setting where you can simply be yourself
  • Time to talk about whatever feels important, past or present
  • Attentive, thoughtful listening, without judgement
  • Space to explore your inner world at your own pace
  • Gentle guidance, as we seek understanding and progress

What you may gain from therapy

As we explore your experiences and feelings, you may begin to notice:

  • Clearer understanding of your own emotional needs
  • Increased confidence in expressing yourself
  • Shifts in perspective that lighten the load or enable progress
  • More balanced and fulfilling relationships
  • A stronger sense of self-worth
  • Greater compassion for yourself and others

Therapy can be a transformative way to engage with other people, and manage relationships with more clarity, confidence and enjoyment.
